This article was last updated and fact checked on May 23, 2024 by Mani Karthik.

As someone who’s made the journey from India to the USA multiple times, I can confidently say that the U.S. is generally a safe destination for travelers.

However, like any country, there are certain factors to consider to ensure a smooth and worry-free trip.

In this article...

  • General Safety
  • Safety Tips
  • Health and Safety
  • COVID-19 Considerations
  • Specific Concerns
  • Advice for Elder Folks Visiting USA
  • Overall

General Safety

The USA has a well-developed infrastructure, good law enforcement, and relatively low crime rates in most areas.

You’re likely to feel safe walking around in major cities during the day and using public transportation.

Of course, like anywhere, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas.

Helpful Tip

When traveling to USA, travel insurance is much recommended.

Two great plans are, Atlas America and Safe Travels USA.

However there are other choices like these, as well.

Safety Tips

  • Research Your Destination: Before you go, research the specific cities or regions you plan to visit. Some areas might have higher crime rates or specific safety concerns to be aware of.
  • Stay Aware: Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and be cautious when interacting with strangers.
  • Follow Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs to avoid any misunderstandings or legal issues.
  • Use Reliable Transportation: Opt for reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps, and be cautious when using public transportation late at night.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts, including the Indian embassy or consulate, and your family and friends back home.

Health and Safety

The USA has a high standard of healthcare, but it’s also notoriously expensive.

It’s crucial to have adequate travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, including hospitalization and evacuation if needed.

COVID-19 Considerations

Stay updated on the latest travel advisories and COVID-19 regulations for both India and the USA.

Be prepared to provide proof of vaccination or negative test results as required.

Specific Concerns

  • Gun Violence: While mass shootings are a concern in the USA, they are relatively rare. However, it’s wise to be aware of the issue and stay informed about any potential risks in the areas you visit.
  • Natural Disasters: Depending on the region and time of year, the USA can experience natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, or wildfires. Check the weather forecast and be prepared for potential disruptions.

Advice for Elder Folks Visiting USA

  • Medical Checkup: Before your trip, get a thorough medical checkup and ensure you have enough medication for the entire duration of your stay, plus some extra.
  • Travel Insurance: It’s even more crucial for elders to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions and provides adequate medical coverage.
  • Comfortable Clothing and Footwear: Pack comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for walking and various weather conditions.
  • Accessibility: If you have mobility issues, research accessible accommodations and transportation options in advance.
  • Pace Yourself: Don’t overexert yourself. Plan your itinerary with plenty of rest stops and avoid overly ambitious schedules.
  • Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Drink plenty of water, especially in warmer climates, and maintain a healthy diet to stay energized.

Overall

While there are certain risks to be aware of, the USA is generally a safe and welcoming destination for Indian travelers.

By doing your research, taking precautions, and staying informed, you can have a wonderful and memorable experience exploring this diverse and exciting country.
