Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – Complete Guide

  • December 11, 2022

This article was last updated and fact checked on January 28, 2023 by Mani Karthik.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form used by the United States Department of Education to determine a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study programs.

The FAFSA is the only form accepted by the government to determine an applicant’s eligibility for these types of aid.

The FAFSA must be completed each year in order for students to be eligible for any type of federal aid.

It can be completed either online or through a paper form. The form requires applicants to provide information about their income, assets, family size, and other factors to determine their eligibility.

In addition to the basic information required, applicants may also need to provide additional documentation such as tax returns, W2 forms, and bank statements.

The FAFSA also requires applicants to list the schools they are interested in attending in order to determine which schools are eligible for the funds.

Once the form is submitted, the Department of Education will review the information and determine the amount of aid that a student is eligible to receive.

Funds are typically disbursed directly to the school and can be used to cover tuition, fees, room and board, books, and other educational expenses.

The FAFSA is an important step in the process of applying for and receiving federal financial aid.

It helps ensure that those who need help with their educational costs can access the funds they need to succeed.

Who is eligible for Free Application for Federal Student Aid?

In order to be eligible for the FAFSA, students must meet certain criteria.

First, the student must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. This includes U.S. nationals, permanent residents, and certain other non-citizens with valid immigration documents.

Second, the student must have a valid Social Security Number. If they do not have one, they must apply for one before submitting their FAFSA.

Third, the student must have a valid high school diploma or equivalent. This includes GEDs, home school diplomas, and foreign secondary school diplomas.

Fourth, the student must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible degree or certificate program at an accredited college or university. Some schools require additional criteria to be met in order to be eligible for aid, so it is important to check with the school’s financial aid office.

Finally, the student must meet certain income requirements. Generally speaking, the student’s family’s income must not exceed certain thresholds, depending on the size of the family.

In addition, students may be asked to provide additional information such as tax returns and other financial documents when completing the FAFSA.

Once these criteria are met, students are eligible to submit their FAFSA and apply for federal student aid. Financial aid awards can vary greatly depending on a student’s individual situation, so it is important to research and compare different options to find the best fit for each student.

However there are other choices like these, as well.

When can I first apply for the FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid )?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form can be filled out and submitted starting October 1 of each year.

This allows students to apply for financial aid at any point in the school year. In order to get the most federal, state and school aid possible, it is best to submit the application as close to the October 1 opening date as possible.

According to Mark Kantrowitz, students who file the FAFSA within the first three months (October, November and December) tend to receive more than twice as much grant funding, on average, than students who file the FAFSA later.

Even if a student does not know which school they will be attending, it is still beneficial to fill out the FAFSA form. To ensure that you are considered for priority consideration, be sure to submit your application by April 1, 2023, midnight Central time.
