So, your Indian passport is about to expire, and you’re living in the USA?

Don’t worry—you’re not alone in this situation.

Thousands of Indian nationals face the same challenge every year.

The process to renew your Indian passport while living in the USA is straightforward but does require some attention to detail.

Let’s walk you through the steps so you can get it done without any hassle.

In this article...

  • Step 1: Know When to Renew Your Passport
  • Step 2: Gather the Required Documents
  • Step 3: Fill Out the Online Application
  • Step 4: Submit Your Application to VFS Global
  • Step 5: Track Your Application Status
  • Step 6: Receive Your New Passport
  • Final Thoughts: Stay Prepared

Step 1: Know When to Renew Your Passport

Ideally, you should start the passport renewal process when your passport is about to expire within the next 12 months.

But if you’re cutting it close, don’t panic.

Just make sure to allow at least 3-4 weeks for processing.

It’s always a good idea to have plenty of time before you actually need your passport for travel or other purposes.

Helpful Tip

When traveling to USA, travel insurance is much recommended.

Two great plans are, Atlas America and Safe Travels USA.

However there are other choices like these, as well.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

Before you apply for the renewal, you’ll need a few key documents.

Make sure to gather these ahead of time to avoid delays:

  • Your current Indian passport (original and photocopy).
  • Proof of U.S. residence, like a utility bill or lease agreement.
  • A passport-sized photo (2×2 inches) with a white background.
  • Your U.S. visa or other valid proof of legal status in the U.S.
  • If applicable, a name change document (marriage certificate, court order, etc.).

Once you have all of these, you’re ready to apply.

Tip: Double-check your documents to avoid delays in processing.

Step 3: Fill Out the Online Application

The next step is to fill out the online application on the Passport Seva website.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to the website: Visit the official Passport Seva at https://passport.gov.in/nri/.
  2. Create an account: If you don’t already have one, create a new account by clicking on “Register.”
  3. Fill out the form: Complete the online application form with all the required details, including your personal information and current passport details.
  4. Upload a photo: Make sure to follow the guidelines for the photo size and quality.
  5. Pay the fee: The passport renewal fee varies based on the type of service you select (normal or tatkal).

Once you’ve filled everything out, download and print the completed application.

Step 4: Submit Your Application to VFS Global

Now, you’ll need to submit your documents and application to VFS Global, which handles Indian passport services in the USA.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the VFS Global website: Visit the Indian Passport Services section on https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/ind/.
  2. Select your jurisdiction: Depending on your location in the U.S., you’ll be assigned a consulate (New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, or Washington D.C.).
  3. Schedule an appointment: While VFS mainly handles applications via mail, you can visit in person in certain cases. Most applications are submitted by mail, so double-check what’s required.
  4. Mail your application: Send your completed application form, supporting documents, and passport via trackable mail (FedEx or UPS).

Step 5: Track Your Application Status

Once your application is submitted, you can track its status through the VFS Global website.

Here’s how:

  • Go to https://visa.vfsglobal.com/.
  • Enter your tracking ID (provided by VFS) to get updates on your application status.

Tip: Keep your tracking number handy to check the status anytime you want.

Step 6: Receive Your New Passport

After your application is processed, your new passport will be mailed back to you.

It usually takes 3-4 weeks for normal processing and 1-2 weeks for tatkal service.

Make sure to check your new passport carefully for any errors, and keep it safe.

You’re all set!

Final Thoughts: Stay Prepared

Renewing your Indian passport while living in the USA is a simple process, as long as you follow the steps carefully.

Make sure you start the process early and have all the necessary documents ready to avoid unnecessary delays.

With this guide, you’ll be able to navigate the process without stress and get your renewed passport in hand.

    Hello,

For a high school student, what kind of proof of US residence can be provided? I don’t have a utility bill or lease document in my name. Can I provide my school transcript?

    regards,
    Richa
