An International Travel News article, published in August 2011, said that the frequency of overseas travelers requiring outpatient treatment is one per 1,000 trips, while the frequency of travelers being admitted to hospitals as inpatients is one per 2,000 trips.

On the other hand, the Visa Statistics Report from the US Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, revealed that a total of 49,567 Indians visited the United States for a short trip in June 2017. Putting two and two together, one can figure out that about 496 of these people were at risk of facing a medical contingency, and you could be one of them.

Health care in the United States is not just costly, it is the most expensive in the world! If you do not want to watch your travel budget take a hit and ruin your time in the United States, read and find out some of the best travel insurance policies that will cover your medical and travel emergencies.

Insubuy

Insubuy provides a number of policies for travelers going to the US for a duration as short as 5 days. There are several others that provide high coverage, including for pre-existing conditions. Some of the more pricey policies also provide coverage for up to 2 years, in case you plan on visiting the US more than once in those years.

ICICI Lombard Travel Insurance

This policy, offered by ICICI Lombard, provides coverage for loss of baggage, emergency hotel extension, political risk, and catastrophe evacuation, and reimbursement in case of trip cancellation or interruption. The company also has a tie-up with United Health International (UHI), one of the largest and most diverse healthcare companies in the United States.

In case, your trip gets extended unexpectedly, the policy can be extended for up to 180 days!

An emergency hotel booking extension is also covered. Hospitalization, in the case of Swine Flu/ H1N1 influenza, is also covered, although there is no cover for pre-existing conditions. In the case of hospitalization of the policyholder, benefits for a compassionate visit are provided to a family member.

Future Generali Travel Insurance

This policy for overseas travel provides you benefits for all medical contingencies and hospital expenses, financial trouble in case of delay, loss or damage to your baggage, and loss or theft of passport.

If you are buying a policy for someone between the ages of 71 and 80 years, this policy may be a good choice, since it provides special benefits, such as international support services while hospitalization.

Buying this policy guarantees complete protection, with 24*7 toll-free assistance. This policy, however, does not cover pre-existing diseases and may not be the best choice for elderly travelers with serious medical conditions.

(I don’t recommend buying travel insurance from India. Reasons here.)

When planning a trip often we are so excited about it that we do not even consider the possibility of a mishap. But every time one travels overseas he or she must have some kind of coverage, it is not an added expense but protection from an unexpected expense.
