If you’re an Italian citizen planning your first trip to the United States, you’re probably wondering whether you need a visa to enter the country. The good news is that, as an Italian passport holder, you have some convenient options thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your trip to the USA.
In this article...
Understanding the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
What is the VWP?
The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of certain countries, including Italy, to travel to the United States for tourism, business, or transit purposes without obtaining a visa. Instead, travelers need to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
How Long Can You Stay?
With an approved ESTA, you can stay in the United States for up to 90 days. If you plan to stay longer or your trip doesn’t fall under the VWP purposes, you’ll need to apply for the appropriate visa.
Steps to Travel to the US under the VWP
1. Apply for an ESTA
Before you travel, you must apply for an ESTA. This is a straightforward process that can be completed online. Here’s how:
- Visit the Official ESTA Website: Go to the US Customs and Border Protection ESTA website.
- Complete the Application Form: Fill out the online application with your personal information, passport details, travel plans, and security questions.
- Pay the Fee: There is a processing fee for the ESTA application, which you can pay online.
- Receive Approval: Most applications are approved within minutes, but it’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your departure.
2. Check Your Passport
Ensure your Italian passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay in the United States. The VWP requires your passport to be an electronic passport with a digital chip containing your biometric information.
3. Prepare for Your Trip
Once your ESTA is approved, you’re ready to prepare for your trip. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Keep a Copy of Your ESTA Approval: Although it’s not mandatory to carry a physical copy, it’s a good idea to have one for your records.
- Plan Your Itinerary: Make sure you have your travel plans and accommodation details sorted out.
- Understand Entry Requirements: Be prepared to answer questions from US Customs and Border Protection officers about your trip.
When You Might Need a Visa
1. Staying Longer than 90 Days
If you plan to stay in the US for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a visa. Common visa types include:
- B-1/B-2 Visa: For business or tourism purposes, valid for longer stays.
- F-1 Visa: For students attending academic institutions.
- J-1 Visa: For exchange visitors participating in cultural exchange programs.
2. Other Travel Purposes
If your visit involves activities not covered by the VWP, such as working, studying, or immigrating, you’ll need the appropriate visa.
How to Apply for a US Visa
1. Determine the Type of Visa
Visit the US Department of State Visa Wizard to find out which visa type suits your travel purpose.
2. Complete the DS-160 Form
Fill out the DS-160 form online, which is the non-immigrant visa application form.
3. Schedule an Interview
Book an appointment for a visa interview at the nearest US Embassy or Consulate in Italy.
4. Gather Required Documents
Prepare all necessary documents for your visa interview, including:
- Passport: Valid for travel to the US.
- DS-160 Confirmation Page: A printout of the confirmation page.
- Visa Fee Receipt: Proof of payment of the visa application fee.
- Photograph: One recent passport-sized photo.
- Supporting Documents: Evidence of your ties to Italy, financial stability, and travel itinerary.
5. Attend the Visa Interview
Go to your scheduled interview with all required documents. The consular officer will ask questions to determine your eligibility for the visa.
Conclusion
Italian citizens have the convenience of traveling to the United States without a visa for short trips under the Visa Waiver Program. By applying for an ESTA, ensuring your passport meets the requirements, and preparing properly, you can enjoy a hassle-free entry into the US.
For longer stays or other travel purposes, applying for the appropriate visa will ensure your trip goes smoothly. Safe travels!

Hello, I’m a Italian citizen.
I work in Guyana for a Exxon oil & gas contractor (Halliburton). I’m required to do 2 weeks quarantine in Houston at a Exxon facility then will board a Exxon charter flight to Georgetown Guyana.
Do I require a visa to do quarantine in Houston only on my Italian passport ?
Kind Regards
Warren – Italy
