In March 2020 the Indian Government had shut its doors to foreign nationals entering the country. This rule has been relaxed now. Here are the updates.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic outbreak, foreign nationals could not enter India since March 2020. All air travel and flights incoming to India were closed until further notice. (Source)

This created a panicky situation for many NRIs and Indian origin-foreign nationals in countries like the USA, UK, and UAE.

Many NRIs had relatives in India and most were even frequent visitors to India for business and other personal purposes. None of them could travel to India during this time (March – June, 2020).

In our WhatsApp groups, many were even complaining of not being able to travel even in emergencies. The Indian Embassy in USA, was the only hope for NRIs but even the Embassy was flooded with applications from NRIs to return to India.

So, this news from Indian Government comes as a relief to many NRIs who wants to return and visit India during this COVID pandemic situation.

Here is the official order from the Indian Government.

According to which the following categories of foreign nationals and NRIs can return to India in non-scheduled chartered flights.

Foreign nationals coming to India on Business visas. (other than on B-3 visa for sports) in non-scheduled commercial chartered flights.

Foreign healthcare professionals, health researchers, engineers and technicians for technical work at Indian health sector facilities, including laboratories and factories. This is subject to a letter of invitation from a recognized and registered healthcare facility registered pharmaceutical company or accredited University in India.

Foreign engineering, managerial, design, or other specialists traveling to India on behalf of foreign business entities located in India. This includes all manufacturing units, design units, software, and IT units as well as financial sector companies (banking and non- banking financial sector firms).

Foreign technical specialists and engineers traveling for installation, repair and maintenance of foreign-origin machinery and equipment facilities in India, on the invitation of a registered Indian business entity. These could be for equipment installation or is under warranty, or for after-sales servicing or repair on commercial terms.

However, there’s a catch.

The foreign nationals allowed under these four categories will need to apply for a fresh visa from Indian Embassies abroad.

Make sure you get a good health insurance plan while visiting USA.

A vast country of endless diversity, India is the second largest nation in terms of population, with more than 1 billion people! What makes it truly unique is the way in which majestic architecture, widespread landscapes, festivals, languages, religion, wildlife, Bollywood, cuisine and a rich history co-exist perfectly. No wonder there were 1.3 million visitors to the country from the United States in 2016 alone, a number that has grown by over 27% till 2019, according statistics by Business Standard.

Things to Bring to India from USA

Keeping in mind the health concerns and drastic seasonal changes, traveling to India might seem challenging. So, here’s a simplified checklist of what you should bring with you.

Passport and Visa

First and foremost, put all your important travel documents together, without which entry to India would be impossible. Other than these, make sure you keep your flight itinerary, identity and address proofs of where you will be staying in the country handy. It is best to keep printed as well as electronic copies of the travel documents with you.

Comfortable Clothing

During the peak winter and summer seasons, cities like Delhi, Rajasthan, Kolkata, etc., experience extreme harsh climate. It is recommended to carry long-sleeved clothes to protect yourself from the heat as well as the cold. It is always best to pack according to the season. Breathable and loose garments are best for summer. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes and some strong sunblock too.

Medicines

India is congested and polluted. No point hiding the truth. So, bring your personal asthma inhaler and other medication that you might need in case of an emergency. Over the counter medicines are much cheaper in India and easily available. You could also consider bringing malaria medicines, since mosquito-borne ailments are common. Carry Pee Safe products too, since public toilets tend to be unhygienic.

Accessories

Carry a camera and accessories like tripods etc. A camera is one thing without which half of the essence of traveling to India would be lost. To keep your memories of the country afresh, don’t forget to capture the moments as they occur. Bring your personal earplugs and power bank too. India is a hoarder of duplicate items. You might be fooled into buying low quality electronics, believing them to be the real thing!

Money

You can bring limitless foreign exchange into India. However, if your currency exceeds $5,000 and checks exceed $10,000, you will need to inform the customs authorities in the Currency Declaration Form. Again, you can convert your currency at the airport itself, without any limitations.

Miscellaneous

You might wish to travel by train. Don’t forget to bring little pouches of toiletries like hand sanitizers, toilet paper, soap and so on for such journeys. Keep bug sprays and your personal electronics handy. Carry plug adaptors for your electronic devices because these would be unavailable in India. Lastly, bring books or a good playlist to kill time. The concept of punctuality here is very different from that in Western countries.

While this might not be a complete list, it does cover the basics that you will need during your Indian travels. Making your own checklist and ticking off items as you pack can help you avoid missing out on any necessities.

Every US citizen should possess a valid passport and visa to travel to India. Applicants must possess a passport that is valid for at least six months, starting from the…

Every US citizen should possess a valid passport and visa to travel to India. Applicants must possess a passport that is valid for at least six months, starting from the date of arrival in India. In addition, you need to submit proof of sufficient funds and return or onward journey tickets to be granted a tourist visa. Remember, India is among the few countries that does not provide visa on arrival, so make sure you get your visa before leaving the US.

You can also apply for an electronic visa or e-visa, though an online application process, following which they will receive a visa confirmation email. Take a printout of this email, since it is proof of your visa status. You will need to produce it before the airport authorities at your port of entry in India. It is important to note that an e-visa is valid only for a single entry and stay of up to 60 days. If you are traveling to India for a longer period, you will need to apply for a paper visa that allows you stay in India of up to 10 years, with multiple entries.

MAke sure that you get good health insurance when visiting US.

A few grounds on which US citizens can apply for a visa are sightseeing, business and medical treatment, among others. The visa that you apply for will depend on the purpose of your visit.

Steps for Visa Application

The first step is to fill up the visa application form. The printed copy of the filled form needs to be submitted to the Indian Visa Application Center or the Indian embassy or consulate closest to you. The form must include accurate and complete information. Misrepresenting any information could lead to visa rejection.

With the form, you will need to submit a digital photograph, meeting all the dimension requirements for an Indian visa, in JPEG format, as well as required documents for proof of identity, address and so on. You can check out the list of required documents here.

Once the form has been filled and submitted successfully, the next step is to pay the visa fee, which is about $160 for most visa types. If you are applying for an e-visa, you will need to pay an additional fee of $100 and processing fee of $19.90.

Once you’ve submitted the form and paid the fees, you will receive a confirmation receipt. Make sure you keep this safe, since you might need it at a later point. It is important to keep in mind that the US citizens need to apply for the correct visa type because it cannot be modified after arrival. For example, those traveling to India with the intention of taking part in a religious ceremony should apply for a missionary visa, rather than a tourist visa.

Things to Keep in Mind While Traveling to India

If the applicant is a scholar who has plans to conduct research work in India, they need to bring an additional research clearance letter, along with their visa.

If you are planning to stay for more than 180 days, you will need to register within 14 days of arrival in India with your nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office.

Immigration clearance is absolutely necessary for stepping onto Indian soil. This is done through the Indian Arrival Card and the Customs Declaration Form, which will be provided to you during your flight to India. You will need to submit it to the airport officials at your port of entry.

It is highly advised to apply for travel insurance too. This will keep you protected during times of emergency.

Getting an Indian visa is not a difficult process. In fact, once you log on to the visa application site, it will guide you through the entire process.

There is an irresistible charm about India – its rich heritage, diverse culture, and warm-hearted people.

Whether you are visiting to soak in its historical grandeur, to engage in business, or to study its unique traditions, you must first navigate the Indian visa application process.

The steps may seem daunting initially, but with this guide, we’ll make it as smooth as silk.

Types of Indian Visas

India offers various visa types to suit different purposes of travel. Each visa type comes with its own set of regulations and durations of stay:

Tourist Visa: For international travelers visiting India for tourism, meeting friends or relatives.

Business Visa: For business ventures, technical meetings, or setting up industrial projects.

Student Visa: For international students accepted into an Indian institution for a full-time course.

Employment Visa: For foreign nationals coming to India for employment.

Conference Visa: For attending conferences or seminars held in India.

Journalist Visa: For professional journalists and photographers.

You should apply for the visa that aligns with your purpose of travel. Remember, violation of visa terms can lead to penalties or bans on future travel to India. To know more about the types of Indian visas, visit the official website.

The Visa Application Process

Step 1: Complete the Online Application

Indian visa applications are processed online via the Indian government’s official visa website. The application form is comprehensive, requiring details about your planned travel, passport details, personal information, and a recent photograph.

Step 2: Book an Appointment

After filling out the application, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at your nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate for biometric data collection.

Step 3: Document Submission

The website will provide a checklist of required documents for your visa type. Typically, this includes your passport, proof of residence, and itinerary, among other items.

Step 4: Pay the Visa Fee

Pay the visa fee online. The fee varies depending on your country of origin and visa type. Remember, the fee is non-refundable even if your application is rejected. You can check the fees here.

Step 5: Attend Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, bring all the necessary documents, your passport, and a printed copy of your appointment letter. Your biometric data will be collected during this appointment.

Step 6: Track Your Application

You can track the status of your visa application online using the unique tracking ID provided during the application process. Track your application here.

Step 7: Receive Your Visa

If approved, you will receive your visa via mail, or you may need to pick it up in person, depending on the procedures of your local consulate.

Key Considerations

It’s advisable to apply for your Indian visa at least 15 days before your intended travel date, as per the information provided by the Indian Embassy in USA.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from India. Visit US Embassy in India for more details.

Ensure all the information provided is accurate. Incomplete or false information can lead to delays or denial of your visa.

Make sure your photo and signature meet the specifications set out in the guidelines.

That’s it!

With this guide, the process of applying for an Indian visa should be easier to navigate.

Remember, the key to a successful application lies in careful preparation and adherence to the guidelines.

For more information, visit the official website.

Happy travels!

A US passport is considered among the most powerful passports in the world. This is mainly because it allows US citizens to travel to 184 countries and territories without needing a travel visa or even visa on arrival. However, India isn’t on the US Visa Waiver Program, which means that American passport holders need to apply for a tourist visa if they wish to visit India for leisure or business purposes.

The good news is that the process of getting a visit visa for India is not a complex process and the application can be completed online. So, if you are planning to travel to India, here are some things about the tourist visa that you should know.

Documents Required for Visa Application

Before you even apply for an Indian visit visa, here are some important documents that you should keep handy:

Detailed Travel Plan

You should be able to provide a complete plan of your trip to India. Documents required for this can include your flight tickets, hotel booking receipts, etc. In case you haven’t booked a ticket yet, you can provide the approximate dates of travel.

Also, keep in mind that you will not be allowed to visit certain sensitive regions in India with a normal visit visa. Such regions include the northeastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, parts of Sikkim and Manipur. Apart from this, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Arunanchal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and some areas in Jammu and Kashmir also require special permission.

To visit any of these areas you need to apply for a Restricted Area Permit or Protected Area Permit (RAP/PAP).

Proof of Address

You can provide any three documents to verify your US address, but make sure that no document is more than 3 months old. These are

Water, gas or electricity bills that have your name on it.

Lease documents, signed by your landlord, if you live in a rented home.

Driver’s license with validity of 6 months or any other state-issued ID.

Information about Past Trips

If you have travelled to India previously, you need to provide clear information about those trips. Such information can include, but is not limited to, the type of visa, date of issue, place of issue, the visa number and the places you stayed at during the trip.

Apart from this, you also need to provide a list of all countries that you have been to in the past 10 years. If you miss out on any country and your passport carries its visa stamp, there is a chance that your visa request may get denied.

Application Fees

To apply for a 10-year visa with multiple entry, the total fees is $157.70. For a 6-month, multiple entry visa, the total fee is $67.70.

Make sure you apply for the Indian tourist visa well in advance, so that there are no unnecessary delays to your trip. Accurate documentation from your side will prevent any roadblocks to visa approval.

According to a report by the Ministry of Tourism, 13.7 lakh US tourists visited India in 2017 alone. India is quite a popular tourist destination for Americans, given its amazing diversity of cultures and traditions, plethora of scenic places and rich history. But like several other countries, India does not provide US tourists a visa on arrival. The visa has to be applied for and obtained before leaving your home country.

The good news is that it is quite easy to get a tourist visa for India and the entire process can be completed online. So, if you are a US citizen, all you need to do is follow some simple steps.

Types of Indian Tourist Visa

First, you need to choose the type of tourist visa you want. There are basically two types:

Electronic Visa

This is valid for a maximum of 60 days and you can apply for it online. It is applicable for tourists visiting the country for leisure, medical treatment or business purposes.

Paper Based Visa

If you need to stay in India for more than 60 days, you need to apply for a paper-based visa at the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.

Cost of Applying

The visa fee will depend on the duration of stay. For instance:

For US nationals seeking a tourist visa for a duration of 10 years with multiple entries, the total fee is $157.70.

For US nationals seeking a tourist visa for a duration of five years with multiple entries, the total fee is also $157.70.

For a six-month, multiple entry tourist visa, the total fee is $67.70.

Documents and Information Checklist for Visa Application

Before applying for an Indian tourist visa, make sure you have the necessary documents ready, including:

Travel Itinerary

Provide a list of places you intend to visit during your trip. Also, note that you won’t be able to enter some regions through a normal tourist visa. These restricted regions include Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, parts of Uttar Pradesh, parts of Sikkim, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

For these restricted regions, you will need to apply for a Protected Area or Permit Restricted Area Permit (PAP/RAP).

Details of the Previous Trip(s) to India

You will need to provide clear information on the cities you have visited, the places you stayed at, your visa type, visa number, date and place of issue during previous visits to India, if any.

List of Countries Visited in the Past

Be sure to list all the countries that you have visited in the past 10 years. In case you don’t mention a country and the visa stamp is present on your passport, it might lead to visa refusal.

Date of Journey

You don’t need to provide the exact date of travel if you have not purchased a ticket yet. Approximate date of the journey will do just fine. Keep in mind that the Indian visa will come into effect the day it gets approved, not on the day you enter the country.

Address Proof

To verify your US address, you first need to ensure that the document is not more than three months old. You can choose from:

State-issued ID or driver’s license with at least 6 months validity.

Utility bills in your name, such as electricity, water or gas bill.

Yearly lease documents in your name, signed by the landlord, if applicable

If the address proof documents, such as lease papers or bills are not in your name, then a proof of your relationship with the person named in the document is required.

If you are planning to visit India to see the magnificent Taj Mahal and the natural beauty of Kerala, make sure you apply for the Indian visa with utmost care. Proper documentation from your end will save you from any hassles during visa application.

Did you know that about 1.37 million US visitors travelled to India in the year 2017? With so many states and their own rich cultural heritage, India’s moderate climate is…

Did you know that about 1.37 million US visitors travelled to India in the year 2017? With so many states and their own rich cultural heritage, India’s moderate climate is best for solo travellers or family vacations. Although recent increases in crime rates and cases of violence with foreign tourists have put up questions of safety regarding foreign tourists.

It is nevertheless a wonderful country to visit. Just keep these points in mind.

Health and Well-being

Experts often advise to have vaccination for typhoid, tetanus, flu and Hepatitis-A, before you visit India. It is better to avoid street foods, tap water, ice-cream and fruit salads from local vendors. Stick to bottled water and packaged food items. If you want to eat street food, go for baked or fried items. Observing, what locals are ordering would be really helpful.

Women Safety

Recent reports have led to heightened concerns around women safety in India; especially in cities like Delhi, Gurgaon and Bangalore. Make sure you dress modestly while travelling in India. Stick to your group and avoid travelling with strangers. Take government licensed tour-guides from your hotels or hostels. Solo female travellers can use transportation like UBER or hotel-provided taxis or public-transport like buses and metros. Avoid travelling alone after dark.

Culture and Social Norms

India is known for the ancient philosophy of ‘Atithi Devo Bhavah’, which means that a guest is the manifestation of god itself. At the same time, it is a place of rich religious diversities and has a conservative mind-set. Keep in mind to follow practices like removing shoes outside religious places and homes. There are many religious institutions where women aren’t allowed; always check with local people before going in to one. Avoid resorting to public displays of affection in places like parks, monumental sites etc, even if you catch the youngsters doing it, according to an article on Matador network.

Travelling in Jammu & Kashmir

The US Department of State issues some guidelines for Americans travelling to the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India. It is possible that you might experience civil unrests and terrorist attacks in that region. Consider travelling to some peaceful regions such as Leh and Ladakh instead, as some tourist destinations in Kashmir Valley such as Gulmarg, Srinagar etc. are not safe for foreign tourists. The government of India strictly prohibits foreign travellers to visit some areas near the Line of Control.

Travelling in North-East India

There have been numerous reports of violent incidents by insurgent groups like bombings of markets, buses, and other public transport systems in the North-Eastern region of India. US government has prohibited the employees from visiting states of Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram without proper authorization.

India has a vast religion, cultural and ethnic diversity; these along with the warmth of people there, make it one of the most appealing vacation destinations. However, there are certain aspects to consider before visiting it, which is true for every country in the world. Things that are considered normal in western cultures may be unusual in India. If possible, try to learn a little bit of ‘Hindi’; the official language of the country before visiting.

India is a favourite destination for people around the world, owing to its rich cultural heritage, amazing hospitality, beautiful landscape and delectable cuisine. Over 10 million foreign visitors arrived in the country in the year 2017; a 15.6% increase in number from 2016’s 8.89 million, according to figures on Wikipedia.

It is a huge country, and for someone who plans a visit, it is important to know about the difference in area-wise topography and weather conditions. Here is a season-wise list of places to help you plan your travel itinerary

Winters – November to Mid-February

If you want to see Indian terrain in a beautiful blanket of snow, there are places like Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh, Sonmarg in Kashmir, Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh or Zuluk in Sikkim that are famous for their breath-taking valleys. If you seek some adventure, go trekking in Pelling, Sikkim or you can go for a thrill in Nelong Valley in Uttarakhand. In case you aren’t up for hilly terrains, visit the backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala. Stay in a house boat among the green landscape. Kumily spice gardens and the beaches of Kovalam and Varkala are some of the other popular destinations in the same state. Immerse yourself in Dravidian temple architecture in Tamil Nadu, French colonies in Pondicherry or can see the stunning landscape of Rajasthan.

Spring – Mid-February to March

As Charles Dickens once said, “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade”. Spring is the perfect season in India for you to have a romantic getaway. You can plan a trip to the epitome of love and an architectural marvel, the Taj Mahal and attend the Taj Mahotsav; a 10 day non-stop carnival celebrating India’s ethnic diversity. This is also the perfect time to go hiking and paragliding in Bir, Himachal Pradesh or plan a visit to the enchanting mountains of Darjeeling, West Bengal .If you want a jungle safari, the Kanha National Park is a must-see destination in spring-time.

Summer – April to June

Summers can be pretty harsh in India. Fortunately, the country offers diverse terrains where you can beat the heat of summer. You can run to hill stations in the north such as Kullu-Manali, Kasauli or Tirthan Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Other valleys in north-eastern region of the country include Shillong, Gangtok etc. You can explore South India and visit Horsley Hills, Ooty or Munnar. If you want to escape the mountains, you can see the group of gorgeous islands in Lakshadweep.

Monsoon – July to Mid-September

Hills and mountains carpeted with lush greenery, overflowing lakes with sparkling water, spectacular waterfall sceneries; monsoon in India is a heavenly sight for the eyes, according to an article on Travel Triangle. Experience the vast coffee plantations embedded in the gorgeous scenery of Coorg, Karnataka; a perfect monsoon destination to escape to. Apart from that you can also explore lush greenery of Mahabaleshwar, waterfalls of Kodaikanal or lose yourself in the valley of flowers in Uttarakhand. Plan for a trek to the Dudhsagar Falls; a marvel of nature located adjacent to the land of beaches, Goa.

Autumn- Mid-September to October

The autumn marks the beginning of the festive season in India. A worthwhile experience would be to visit West Bengal, where the Durga Puja takes place in full swing for a period of 5 days. Get a glimpse of the sprawling tea gardens of Assam and take an elephant safari here.

Be it any season, India has plenty to offer for people having diverse tastes.

Thinking about importing a used car into India? Well, buckle up because it’s not as straightforward as it seems. India has a ton of rules and regulations around car imports, especially used ones.

But don’t worry—I’ve broken down the process into simple steps so you can get your dream car home without pulling your hair out. From understanding the procedure to figuring out the taxes, here’s everything you need to know.

1. Can You Import a Used Car to India?

Yes, you can import a used car into India. However, there are some strict guidelines you must follow.

For instance, the car must meet specific age, environmental, and manufacturing standards to even be considered for import.

Key Requirements:

The car must be right-hand drive: Yep, just like the ones in India. Left-hand drive cars won’t be allowed.

The car must not be older than 3 years: The manufacture date needs to be within 3 years of the import date.

The car must be new to India: This means it shouldn’t have been sold or registered in India before.

Compliance with emission standards: The car should comply with Indian emission regulations, similar to Bharat Stage VI standards.

Tip: Make sure the car has a speedometer showing km/h, not mph!

2. Procedure for Importing a Used Car to India

The import process is quite detailed, and if any step is missed, it could cause a lot of headaches. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Before anything, confirm that your used car meets all the import eligibility criteria mentioned above. If it doesn’t, customs will reject it upon arrival, and you could end up paying huge fines or, worse, lose the car.

Step 2: Hire a Customs Agent

It’s a good idea to hire a licensed Customs House Agent (CHA) who can guide you through the process. They are familiar with the paperwork and procedures, making your life a lot easier.

Step 3: Pay the Import Duties and Taxes

Importing cars to India is expensive due to high import duties. You’ll need to pay Customs Duty, GST, Compensation Cess, and Additional Duties based on the car’s value.

Step 4: Obtain Import Licenses

If you’re not a returning NRI, you’ll need to get an import license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Returning NRIs can bring in one used car under Transfer of Residence without an import license, but the car must still meet other guidelines.

Step 5: Ship the Car

Once the paperwork and payments are sorted, you can go ahead and ship the car. You’ll need to provide your CHA with all the documents for customs clearance, such as the Bill of Lading, Invoice, Insurance, and the Manufacturer’s Date of Manufacture Certificate.

Step 6: Customs Clearance and Registration

When the car arrives at the Indian port, customs will inspect the car and review the paperwork. Once cleared, the car will be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), where you’ll receive the registration number and roadworthiness certificate.

3. Documentation Required

Here’s a checklist of all the documents you’ll need to import a used car:

Bill of Lading: This proves ownership and is issued by the shipping company.

Original Invoice: Showing the purchase price of the car.

Manufacturing Date Certificate: Proving the car is not older than three years.

Customs Declaration Form: Required for clearance.

Insurance Document: For the car’s transit and coverage.

Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate: Ensures compliance with emission norms.

No Objection Certificate (NOC): From the original registering authority, if applicable.

Passport and Proof of Residence: For NRIs importing the car.

Tip: Keep multiple copies of each document. You never know when customs or the RTO might ask for an extra copy.

4. Taxation and Import Duties

This is where things get a little heavy on your pocket. The total import duty on a used car can range from 100% to 125% of the car’s value. Here’s how it’s broken down:

Import Duty Breakdown:

Basic Customs Duty (BCD): 60%

GST: 28%

Compensation Cess: Ranges between 15% to 20% depending on engine size.

Additional Duties: Can vary depending on the car’s origin and value.

So, for example, if the car costs ₹10 lakh, you could end up paying ₹10-12 lakh in duties and taxes on top of that.

5. Are There Any Exemptions?

If you’re an NRI returning to India, you may be eligible for some duty relief under the Transfer of Residence scheme, which allows you to import one used car without a full import license.

However, you still have to pay all the duties and taxes, and the car must still meet the other eligibility criteria.

6. Customs Inspection Process

Once the car arrives at the port, the customs department will perform a thorough inspection to ensure everything is in order. This includes checking the car’s age, engine specifications, and whether it meets India’s emission norms.

Any discrepancies here can lead to fines, penalties, or even confiscation of the vehicle. So it’s crucial to ensure all the paperwork is accurate and complete.

Summary Checklist for Importing a Used Car:

Eligibility Check: Make sure the car is right-hand drive, less than 3 years old, and complies with Indian standards.

Hire a Customs Agent: To handle the process.

Pay Import Duties: Prepare for a hefty import duty of up to 125%.

Obtain Import Licenses: Required for non-NRIs or if it’s not under Transfer of Residence.

Documentation: Ensure all required documents are prepared and in order.

Customs Inspection: Be ready for a detailed inspection at the port.

Final Thoughts

Importing a used car to India is no small feat, especially with the complex regulations and high taxes involved. However, if you follow the guidelines and work with a good customs agent, it can be done smoothly.

Just make sure your car meets the eligibility criteria, have all your documents in order, and be prepared to pay those hefty duties!

For official details and updates, you can always check the DGFT website or the Indian Customs website.

India is a land of diverse cultures, vibrant traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. However, for first-time visitors, the prospect of traveling to India can be both exciting and daunting.

If you’re googling “10 Things To Do Before Visiting India,” you’ve come to the right place. This guide will help you prepare for an unforgettable journey while addressing any concerns you may have about traveling to this fascinating country.

1. Get Your Visa in Order

One of the first things you’ll need is a valid visa to enter India. The type of visa depends on the purpose of your visit – whether it’s for tourism, business, or medical purposes.

Most travelers opt for the e-Visa, which can be easily applied for online. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your planned date of entry.

2. Health Precautions

India has specific health requirements for travelers. Consult your doctor about vaccinations well in advance.

Common vaccines recommended for India include Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Malaria prophylaxis. Also, consider carrying basic medications for common ailments like diarrhea, colds, and pain relief.

3. Travel Insurance

Investing in comprehensive travel insurance is a smart move. Travel insurance covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unforeseen events.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when traveling to a new country.

4. Learn Basic Hindi Phrases

While English is widely spoken in major cities, knowing a few basic Hindi phrases can be very helpful, especially in rural areas.

Simple phrases like “Namaste” (Hello), “Dhanyavaad” (Thank you), and “Kitna hai?” (How much?) can go a long way in making your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

5. Research Local Customs and Etiquette

India has a rich cultural heritage, and understanding local customs and etiquette can enhance your travel experience. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Remove your shoes before entering homes and temples.

Avoid public displays of affection, and always use your right hand for eating and giving or receiving items.

6. Plan Your Itinerary Wisely

India is vast, and trying to see everything in one trip can be overwhelming. Prioritize the places you want to visit based on your interests, whether it’s historical sites, natural beauty, or vibrant cities.

Plan your itinerary to include a mix of experiences and allow for some flexibility.

7. Stay Connected

Ensure you have a reliable way to stay connected while in India. International roaming can be expensive, so consider buying a local SIM card upon arrival.

Airtel and Jio are popular providers with good coverage. Having a working phone will help you navigate, stay in touch with loved ones, and access essential information.

8. Prepare for Different Weather Conditions

India’s weather varies significantly by region and season. Research the climate of the areas you plan to visit and pack accordingly.

If you’re traveling during the monsoon season, bring waterproof clothing and gear. In the summer, lightweight, breathable fabrics are essential to stay cool.

9. Money Matters

Carry a mix of cash and cards for your trip. While major cities have plenty of ATMs and card-friendly establishments, smaller towns and rural areas might prefer cash transactions.

Notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage abroad. Also, keep some local currency (Indian Rupees) handy for small purchases and tips.

10. Stay Informed About Safety

While India is generally safe for tourists, it’s important to stay vigilant. Keep a close eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas. Use reputable transportation options and avoid traveling alone at night.

Familiarize yourself with the contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate in India for emergencies.

Conclusion

Traveling to India can be an enriching and unforgettable experience if you’re well-prepared. By following these 10 tips, you can minimize potential challenges and focus on immersing yourself in the vibrant culture, history, and beauty that India has to offer. Safe travels!
